Teen girls age 13-15 will enjoy sea kayaking, practicing yoga, backpacking in the wilderness, cooking outdoors, rock climbing, camping in tents and rafting on this 2 week overnight Washington camp for girls. This trip really stirs up our enthusiasm for wild places in the Pacific Northwest! The North Cascade National Park area is wet on the west side and dry on the east, which finds us continually inspired with the diversity of our landscapes of jagged pinnacle peaks, blanketed forests, saltwater shorelines, and clear cool rivers! All girls with a taste for adventure and beautiful scenery are welcome to join us on this awesome loop around the North Cascades!
Sign up early, this trip is limited to only 10 girls!
Sea Kayaking: With professional local guides from Elakah Expeditions we'll explore the beautifully rugged shoreline of Lummi Island on our full day of sea kayaking in Northwest Washington. Sea kayaking in 2-person boats is a stable and fun way to learn about wild harvesting, tide pools and the ocean environment and to catch a glimpse of eagles, otters, cruising Orca whales and seals with pups! Sea kayaking in Washington is a favorite activity with past Alpengirls and is sure to inspire you to join us again next year for a multi-day sea kayaking expedition in Alaska or Norway.
Backpacking: Outdoor camping skill basics that minimize the impact on our natural environment are taught right from the beginning on all Alpengirl trips and are relied upon throughout this teen girls camp session. Campers will learn how to properly pack and carry a backpack with a limited and select number of items (sleeping bag, pad, clothing, and a portion of tent and food). We'll leave all extra gear, worries and conveniences behind as we rise above our own expectations! Six days of introductory backpacking 3-7 miles each day with little elevation gain along Ross Lake in North Cascades National Park is a real treat for our Alpengirl Goddesses! The grand finale and ultimate challenge of this backpacking trip is an attempt to summit Desolation Peak. We'll leave our big backpacks behind and hike 7 miles straight up to the Peak. Campers may choose to go a little way up or all the way to the summit. After this hike, you'll be convinced, YOU Belong Outside!
Rock Climbing: A morning introduction to basic rock climbing skills by guides from North Cascades Mountain Guides takes place on rock walls in the Mazama area near the famous Goat Wall. Whether you are a 5.12 climber or have never been climbing outdoors before, there are climbs for all levels. With rope handling, safety talks and communication basics on the ground, climbing shoes, helmets, and harnesses are fitted and we head out for the rocks! You'll spend the afternoon getting hands-on coaching in technique, belaying your friends, and successful climbing! Many climbs are set up simultaneously, so you can take turns between belaying and snacking on lunch. Many girls enthusiastically strive to reach the top of each climb but rappelling (lowering yourself from the top back to the ground) remains the highlight of the day. Swimming in Lake Chelan, a glacier carved gorge filled with crystal clear mountain water, or jumping in the local river after a day of rock climbing is a refreshing treat you won't soon forget!
Rafting or Inflatable Kayaking: Guided by professionals from Osprey Rafting, we'll paddle through some of Washington's biggest waves for a total of 10 river miles from Peshastin to Cashmere on the Wenatchee River. This trip includes the 'bad boy' rapids: Drunkard's Drop, Snow Blind and last but certainly not the least - THE SUFFOCATOR.
The best thing about this trip - besides the fact that All Alpengirl trips ROCK is... "Amount of time on the trail... very little elevation gain backpacking trip with a monumental peak attempt at the end! It's SO worth it!"
