This Montana girls camp adventure is set in the heart of the Alpengirl homeland, SW Montana, Yellowstone country, the land of buffalo, howling wolves, and majestic purple mountains that rise up from golden plains. This is perfect for new teen adventure campers; this trip is the original Alpengirl session. A proven winner year after year, this session is full every summer. It has all the bells and whistles that girls with great altitude desire! The majority of girls new to Alpengirl start with this Montana Adventure or the Washington Olympic Adventure. You may add MT Horse or MT Backpack to this session for 3-weeks with Alpengirl!

Backpacking: Wilderness travel basics and Leave No Trace skills are taught right from the beginning on all Alpengirl trips and are relied upon throughout this adventure. During the 3 or 4-day backpacking trip we'll travel between 4 and 7 miles each day to mountain lakes, through alpine meadows, and along rocky ridges to summit peaks. This section of the itinerary will prove to be the most rewarding to each girl. It will make you feel on top of this world! Each of you will carry your own gear plus some group gear; your load is about 30% of your body weight. The weight you carry is dependent on your physical size and ability. Backpacking will feel difficult to if you have never tried it before. This backpacking trip is meant to challenge you and allow you to feel the rewards of your efforts as well as prove to you that it is FUN!

Rock Climbing: An introduction to basic rock climbing skills on huge river carved canyon walls. Whether you are a 5.12 climber or have never been climbing outdoors before, there are climbs here for every level. With rope handling, safety talks and communication basics on the ground, climbing shoes, helmets, and harnesses are fitted, then we head out for the rocks! You'll spend the day getting hands-on coaching in technique, belaying your friends, and successful climbing! Many climbs are set up simultaneously, so you can take turns between belaying and snacking on lunch. Many girls enthusiastically strive to reach the top of each climb but rappelling (lowering yourself from the top back to the ground) remains the highlight of the day.

Rafting: We'll paddle on the wild Class III whitewater on one of the best rafting rivers in SW Montana, the Yellowstone River with plenty of opportunities for swimming and Alpenolympic water fights!.

Horseback Riding: Following the path of early explorers and native peoples, we'll enjoy a very full day of horseback riding through wildflower meadows in high mountain valleys and across sparkling spring fed creeks. This is a highlight of camp for many girls as they bond with their horse (Ben, Festus, Shiloh, Foxy and others) and our long-time horse guide Mel, simply the best cowboy you will ever meet! Girls that have proven their horse riding skills will be allowed to gallop during portions of the ride. Our western riding adventure will take place in the Centennial Mountains just outside the boundaries of Yellowstone Park. At day's end we will drop down off those lofty Centennial Peaks to our absolute favorite Alpengirl backcountry camp spot. Nestled together in a very special grove of aspen trees surrounded by sage and lilies our tents welcome us with a refreshing sense of 'home'.

Canoeing: Our adventure continues in Idaho on the flat waters of the Henrys Fork of the Snake River for a river day full of sun and Alpenolympic water fights. View nesting osprey, mysterious underwater grasses and moose in the willows, as well an occasional American eagle.

Yellowstone National Park: Bubbling mud cauldrons, kaleidoscopic geysers, and wildlife of Yellowstone National Park! During two days of exploring our nations first national park we'll admire Old Faithful, dip our toes in the Firehole River, learn about this huge caldera with the Alpengirl "Ranger," camp at Yellowstone Lake, and behold the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.

Final Celebration: The town of Bozeman is host for our souvenir shopping and final pizza party celebration. This will complete two weeks of unforgettable adventure under the big skies of Montana.
