Day 1: ALOHA! Arriving at Kona Intl' airport, your Alpenguides will greet you and introduce you to the rest of your group for general camp introductions followed by the first of many delicious and fresh "camp gourmet" meals. Camping nearby.
Day 2: Yoga introduction and camp orientation before our backpacking descent 1-mile downhill into the Waipio Valley. Camp with our Hawaiian host family on their taro farm. Note: Yoga is an integral part of all Alpengirl camp itineraries and the start to most days.
Day 3-5: Enjoying our challenging 18-mile (round-trip) backpacking adventure from Waipio Valley to Waimanu Valley. Our first day takes us 9 miles up, across the top, and down into the Waimanu Valley. Here we'll spend a full rest day exploring the area waterfalls and beach before we return 9 miles back to Waipio on our third day.
Day 6: A cultural day of learning, helping and sharing with our Hawaiian host family who operate a taro farm and open their hearts and culture to us by offering activities such as lei making, food gathering, preparing and cooking a traditional meal with us in an earth oven, making serving plates from banana stumps and providing the priceless comfort of family. The time spent here is sure to be the highlight and the heart of this Hawaii experience.
Day 7: We'll say "a hui hou" (see you later!) and make an early morning 1-mile backpacking ascent back "up top" to our vehicle and continue through the small community of Honoka'a to a campground nearby.
Day 8: Showers, laundry and swimming. Camping in Volcanoes National Park.
Day 9: Volcanoes National Park features two active volcanoes (Mauna Loa and Kilauea), we'll spend a full day exploring and hiking trails to craters, lava tubes and other volcanic wonders. Camping in the Park.
Day 10: On the black lava flats of the Kona coast, Pu'uhonua o Honaunau preserves aspects of traditional Hawaiian life, it is a sacred place, a place of refuge and was a natural place for the ali'I - royal chiefs - to establish one of their most important residences. A walking tour of the preserve followed by snorkeling will complete another day of wonder in Hawaii. Camping near Captain Cook.
Day 11-12: Two mornings of surf lessons on the golden Kona coast, snorkeling and beach time, camping near Captain Cook.
Day 13: Early morning farmers market to buy fresh local foods for our final luau feast and celebration followed by sunset horseback riding.
Day 14: Possible early morning ocean swim and boogie boarding before departing from Kona Intl' airport. A Hui Hoi!
