Alaska girls adventure camp is perfect for returning Alpengirls in pursuit of their next BIG teen adventure challenge! Wild Alaska IS nature. Alaska is home to over fourteen species of wild orchids, expansive arctic tundra, glacier-carved fjords, icebergs, midnight sun, and spectacular displays of northern lights. Traveling in the south central portion of the state, you can expect cooler temperatures (40 F avg. in morning and 70 F daytime highs) and brief nights that linger in twilight. Alpengirls in Alaska may experience rain, snow, bugs, moose sightings, bear sightings, new sleep patterns (go to bed late and rise late), canoe portages (carrying canoes for up to 1 mile), and long day hikes (up to 10 miles). Let's go!
Backpacking and Day Hiking: Wilderness travel basics and Leave No Trace skills are taught right from the beginning on all Alpengirl trips and are relied upon throughout this 21-day adventure. Backpacking and day hikes in Alaska will range from 4 miles to 10 miles up mountain passes, through alpine tundra, and near the glacier's edge. Day hikes, require that each of you carry your own extra clothing, lunch, and supplies for a comfortable day of adventure in the mountains. During the backpacking trip you'll carry all of your own gear plus some group gear, a load of about 30% of your body weight. Our goal for backpacking and day hiking is to introduce you to the Alaskan wilderness and to provide you with a physically rewarding challenge.
Rafting: Celebrate the Summer Solstice with a midnight run down Matanuska River class IV whitewater! On the upper reaches of the river, Matanuska Glacier encounters Lion Head, a massive rock wall, where the resulting squeeze play has created several miles of rafting exhilaration! Stopping next to the moraine of the black ice glacier, its time to relax around a crackling campfire and enjoy a riverside dinner cookout.
Sea Kayaking: Valdez, Alaska. The Shoup Glacier overnight sea-kayaking trip is the most spectacular of it's kind in the world. Climb aboard a motorboat for a taxi ride to Shoup Bay where this scenic journey begins. Offering a full spectrum of wildlife from seals and sea otters to nesting birds, bald eagles, and maybe even whales, kayaking this waterway affords a peaceful platform from which to observe. On these days you will paddle by islands of floating icebergs, a nesting colony of Black Legged Kittiwakes, and come face to face with the unearthly beauty of the Shoup Glacier. Enjoy picnic spots that allows colorful and surreal study of the ancient floating ice mountain - thousands of feet thick and thousands of years old. Words don't suffice to describe its delicate, yet ominous beauty, but you can try... !
Canoeing: A ferry ride through Prince William Sound will land us on the Kenai Peninsula where we'll paddle our way through the Swan Lakes canoe system in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, a true wilderness backcountry expedition. 4 days of canoeing and portaging between several small pristine lakes, camping on islands, and a full day of Moose River paddling is an unforgettable experience that few people will ever know in their lifetime.
Kenai Fjords National Park: We will hike 4 strenuous miles past Exit Glacier to arrive at the edge of an 800 square-mile icefield! The Harding Icefield is one of the four major icecaps in the U.S., burying all but the very tops of the Kenai Mountain Range - these points in the horizon are called, nunataks or "lonely peaks." Souvenir shopping, followed by the Alpengirl pizza party celebration will complete three weeks of exceptional adventure in the Last Great Frontier - Alaska.
